Copenhagen Boycott Averted; Cash For Trees On Table NPR
14.12.09
Rhetoric ruled at least part of the day in Copenhagen, as developing countries, led by African delegations, threatened to boycott the talks. Their beef: Western countries, they said, were preparing in secret meetings to jettison the Kyoto Protocol and forge a new international deal on limiting greenhouse gas emissions. By the end of the day, the African walkout was canceled, just as walkouts at previous climate meetings were threatened and then abandoned after much public hand-wringing.
The theatrics weren't confined to official delegations. Over the weekend, demonstrators organized huge marches in the city to urge more action from negotiators inside. Given that the thousands of negotiators inside the forum were making so little progress, it gave the assembled media horde material for film and fulmination.
Chopping Block For Kyoto?
In fact, however, the Kyoto Protocol could well be in peril. It requires developed countries to reduce emissions over a four-year period ending in 2012. The idea in Copenhagen is to either extend it or replace it. Developing nations aren't required to reduce their emissions under the protocol — thus their consternation over losing that privileged status under some new deal. What developing countries fear — and so far refuse to discuss — is the idea that a new climate regime will legally require them to reduce their own emissions. They have reason to suspect that that likelihood is in the works, since negotiators from Europe, Japan and the United States have said it's time for some of the less economically developed nations to accept binding limits.

Is it possible to cash a Natwest cheque anywhere now for cash in hand?
Feb 09, 2009 by TrulyEnlightened | Posted in Personal Finance
I heard Post Offices used to do it, I'm not sure now though. Previous cheques I've had from my employer I have waited the working days for them to clear but the reason I need this money fast is to buy a new TV before a sale ends. Anyone know if PO's accept cheques for cash now or any other place? I'm based in Scotland.
If it is a crossed cheque then the only place you can expect to get cash for it immediately is from one of the cheque exchange places which are dodgy as hell and charge you a fortune to get the money instantly.
If you're over 18 then go and pay the cheque into your account at natwest and then ask them to give you a small overdraft so you can have cash immediately until the cheque lands in your account. They should be able to get you an overdraft instantly on your account so you can get your hands on the cash.

Hi the only places that i know that cash cheques straight away is places like cash converters & places like these but if you cash the cheque at these sort of places you do get charged for doing it .. hope this helps
slyfox69 | Feb 09, 2009
I'm sure they'd have "Cash For Cheques" places - but they charge commission, as would a Post Office. This is why credit cards are a great idea - you don't have to rely on cash or cheques & can spend on them any time. If you know a mate with a card, or even some spare cash, ask them to buy it for you & pay them back when you have the cash.

What company is best to use for ink cartridge recycling now that cash for critters doesn't do it anymore?
Mar 31, 2008 by Rebecca C | Posted in Other - Environment
I work for the local SPCA (animal shelter) and I am researching/looking for a new place to send ink cartridges to for our recycling fundrasing program. We used to use Cash for Critters, but now they only accept cell phones! Please help! Any suggestions of other companies would be great! Thanks so much!
As far as getting paid to return the cartridges I am unaware of any but HP cartridges can be refilled at Office Max without needing to return them. They can be returned to with the prepaid mailer.

PetSmart Charities supplies free mailers.
Lenore M | Mar 31, 2008
Go to www.Empties4Cash.com. You can sign up your non-profit and they provide mailers and give you around $4.00 for each cartridge sent in.
Very good fundraising opportunity.
Deee | Mar 31, 2008
I wasn't aware that they stopped? PetSmart's website does list as still recycling cartridges...so i'm not really sure...heres a link http://www.petsmartcharities.org/donate/toner-cartridge-recycling.php
Other than that I know a lot of times local schools have ongoing fundraising programs or I would also recommend InkStop...a new chain of office supply store which donates the proceeds to the Boomer Esiason Cystic Fibrosis Foundation...they are an excellent charity with whom I have done some volunteer work with! Hope that may have helped a bit.
Also being an animal lover I'm not sure if you have seen this site.... http://www.theanimalrescuesite.com/clickToGive/home.faces?siteId=3...a portion of every sale goes to help animals in need...I have it set to my home page so everytime i log on theres a big purple button to click which helps donate bowls of food. I know thats a bit random but I'm trying to spread the site and get more people to help out, especially since its as easy as clicking a button!

How is it that years ago, loan sharks used to get arrested for cash advances and now banks blatantly do it?
Apr 25, 2008 by John S | Posted in Credit
I realise that loan sharks used or still break legs to get their money but banks that participate in cash advances are no better, they charge $20 to every hundred same as loans sharks used to or still do but yet the banks are allowed to do this without any repercussions! I have a friend that went for a payday loan to get ahead and he's worse off now, reaaly sad how the system stomps the little guy.
Payday advances really are scum...
They get away with it, because there are laws they abide by, and most of them max out the amount of interest and fees they are allowed to charge.
People need to learn to read the fine print....
Reality Check | Apr 25, 2008
because our elected officals are in bed with the banking industry. They're allowed to charge these big interest rates- give loans to poor credit risks and then be bailed out by s&l with our tax dollars.....it makes me ill
kimba | Apr 25, 2008
I agree with you. I think that pay day advances should be against the law completely. Credit cards are bad enough. They (credit cards) should not be obtainable until the age of at least 25, if ever, lol.

What would be a good Stock to invest in now with a bear market if you have Cash to play around with?
Oct 10, 2008 by Anthony D | Posted in Investing
I have some extra cash and for a young man i sorta understand the financial cycle we are in now. Are there stocks i should investing into because they are super low now?
Right now you can pick just about any large cap stock that has been around for awhile and the upside potential is unlimited. Half of the large cap PE ratios are now bordering on single digits.

You cant do anything, you have to wait until more become available.

Freddy,
I made this site to explain another site similar to prize rebel. You may want to check it out: http://www.gptworld.tk . If your surveys have not credited yet, there is a very helpful walkthrough on that site which also applies to cash crate.

Jump into to the big time dude. Surveys are not going to get where you want to be. Want to earn like the big dogs you have to go where they eat.

I'm sure they're not the only ones either, just the most popular. If you think about what they do it should be obvious to anyone who takes part in the rip off.
Oh I'm not saying they cheat the people who join, of course they wouldn't do that! The scam is perpetrated against the poor advertiser that is offering a nice bonus for people to try their product or service. These are honest businessmen and women who are just trying to make an honest buck and are willing to give in order to receive.
So along comes CashCrate and TreasureTrooper to exploit them, just like Fagin in Oliver Twist (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oliver_Twis... ). Instead of picking up street orphans to train as pickpockets, they find Internet Surfers and train them instead. They teach them to sign up for theses offers and just before they have to pay, cancel everything and bring the money back to CashCrate and TreasureTrooper so you can keep a share.
Who do you think is making all the MONEY???? Just like Fagin, they have everyone scrambling to get a piece of the ill gotten gains.

I need fast cash now to pay some bills help?
Jan 26, 2009 by imjustateenager@sbcglobal.net | Posted in Personal Finance
I have a few bills I have to pay next week and I have no way of paying them. Things are really tight right now and I only have 20.00 in my bank account. Does anyone know a way to make some fast cash? Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
You're living beyond your means. Spending more than you're making. A short term loan is not going to fix that, but instead make things worse. Talk to your creditors and see if they will accept late payment and then clean up your act. Good luck.
David M | Jan 26, 2009
You might want to consider taking back some of the stuff you recently bought (and hopefully still have a receipt for).
Or sell some stuff in a yard sale or on Ebay.
Don't go to a payday loan place... they will charge you an arm and a leg.... which incidently just gave me another idea:
Donate Blood or "you know what".

I got a check from party poker because of all the accounts that closed out. How do I cash it now?
Oct 26, 2007 by bballa211 | Posted in Personal Finance
The check was $92 and change and I went to my bank to cash it and they said since the check is foreign, the fees surpass the amount of the actual check. The amount is in dollars by the way too. What else can I do with this wasted $92 check? Can I go anywhere else?
Frame it, hang it on the wall, and chalk it up to a lesson-learned.
And stop gambling online. It's bad for you.

I bought a car with cash a month ago and now I want I loan. Where can I go to get the loan?
Oct 01, 2007 by Jeff | Posted in Buying & Selling
I paid cash for the car because I thought I would make the process easier. Thinking I would get the loan at a later time. Now I need the cash for another investment and the two companies I called said they do not give loans unless you do not own the car!
You can't get a loan on the car you already own. What you are trying to do is borrow money against the value of the car (as collateral) and you can't do that.
Now you have to get a personal loan to pay for your other "investments" but it'll be at a much greater interest than a car loan.
Bad move on your part. Pay your "stupid tax" (money lost for bad decisions) and learn from your mistakes.

Got cash that i want to invest in good business in Nairobi, Kenya. Who got any good idea.Just now?
Nov 03, 2007 by nbikenya | Posted in Small Business
Got cash that i want to invest in good business in Nairobi, Kenya. Who got any good idea. Am ready to deal in anything legal, may be stall available for sale or new stalls open or even forums where i can get more information.
I have an 'inkling ' of an idea, which I have had for a few years.
But I can get no info about you from your profile, are you living in that area?
I haven't been to Nairobi but I was in Mombasa some years ago, and this idea has been on my mind for some time.
My profile will tell you all you want to know about me.
All I want to know about you is what area do you live in?
You can email me if you want to , it's only an idea I have, may be worthless, but worth a thought or two!
But without more info it would be a waste of time to even discuss it.
Up to you.

is now a good time to switch from stocks and mutual funds to cash and hold for the market to turn around?
Aug 16, 2007 by stormysquirrel | Posted in Investing
everything in stocks and mutual funds is WAY down. Is this going to be another recession? Just because our wonderful government refuses to acknowledge reality (it took them 18 months to admit our country was in a recession despite news reports and common sense several years ago) doesn't mean the public can't acknowledge a recession. All it would take to make it 10x worse is another massive hurricane or terror attack. Let's face it - we don't have a good government right now that has any understanding of anything other than their own pocketbooks. should we take action now?
If you do not currently have a cash reserve, then you might want to reduce your holdings some to acquire one. Sort of an insurance policy. There is every indication that we might be heading into a recession or even worse. If stocks are marked down to half price in a few months time, you will be glad that you have some cash on hand. But investing is a long term proposition and one should not become panic stricken with every mark down in prices just as one should not get over enthused when stocks are hitting new highs.
If you have some investments that are doing exceptionally poorly cutting back on them at this time on them would be appropriate. I have.

Justin.tv Is Redirecting Porn Queries Into Cash
In the down economy, startups are trying everything they can think of to keep a steady flow of revenue coming in. For popular live-streaming video site Justin.tv, it looks like one of these measures is to try to capitalize on its users’ frequent searches for porn: if you run queries for terms like “xxx” or “sex”, the site will automatically redirect you to a third-party pornography page.
Before users are redirected, they’re presented with a message for five seconds indicating that while Justin.tv has banned adult content, the site is sending them to “a site where you can find what you’re looking for”. The new “feature” may be flying under the banner of convenience, but the site is clearly looking for a new source of income. Justin.tv may well be having trouble coping in the current economy, and a porn affiliate pays far more than a blank search results page.
I don’t think there’s anything morally wrong with what Justin.tv is doing - it’s highly unlikely anyone is going to accidentally search the site for “xxx” and get offended when they’re sent to a porn site (though they might get annoyed). But the new ‘feature’ doesn’t gel with much of the content on the site, which features clips of puppies and video games on its home page. And the site should really include a page confirming that the user is over 18 before redirecting them (there seems to be no such confirmation found on at least some of the redirected porn sites).
Above all, I sincerely hope this isn’t the start of a new trend. I hate when sites redirect me without my permission, and fear that other startups could expand on this technique to include other search categories - how annoying would it be if a search for “soccer” sent users to Nike’s homepage? It may sound like an extreme case, but many startups are getting desperate, and a good user experience is often among the first things sacrificed as they try to stay afloat.
